25.05.10 -PUPILS EXPLORE FRUITS OF THE OCEANS IN SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

  • KINGS MONKTON SCHOOL

The first ever Seafood Festival Day has been held at Kings Monkton School in Cardiff aimed at educating pupils about the wide variety of seafood available to them as part of a healthy diet.

At the event primary school pupils were able to sample the fruits of sea in their raw, ‘unprocessed’ state prepared freshly to order for them to sample. The display included lobsters, crabs and oysters, cockles and salmon, showcased to broaden pupils’ culinary horizons.

Organised in conjunction with Kings Monkton’s resident caterers – Spiros of Cardiff - the event also presented a special lunchtime menu including paella, mussels and squid dishes.

Linda Harmer, Head of the Primary School at Kings Monkton said: “We were really pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the children. They were eager to pick up and hold the crabs and lobsters and to taste all the produce on display, the oysters and crabs seemed to be the most popular which was fantastic.

It is important for us to give pupils hands-on experience of the world around them hence the opportunity to touch, smell and eat seafood.  We see this kind of exercise as an integral part of our healthy eating programme at the school, and an important foundation in the development of a healthy, varied diet from a young age.”

Further food festivals are being planned by Kings Monkton as it celebrates its 140th anniversary year.
