Sir Tom made the new live music venue - The Piano Wine Bar at Gios, a Ronnie Scotts style jazz and music venue in Mill Lane - something of a home-coming base during his three concert stint in Cardiff.

Delighted owner Giovanni Malacrino who has opened the club only this week personally looked after the Tom Jones party.

Sir Tom was seen arriving with an entourage on Thursday, the eve of his first concert at the wine bar, enjoying Don Perignon and Italian canapes in the club while attracting polite attention from surprised guests at the bar who could not believe that the great man was amongst them, dining just yards away.

After the party had settled, in an un-roped off booth guests were able to meet Sir Tom in ones and twos throughout the night. He also stood for a couple of photos with delighted guests.

Live music played all night and into the early hours provided by the Lewis Oliver trio who played light jazz and classic swing including rat pack era songs.

Sir Tom clearly enjoyed himself so much that he returned to The Piano Wine Bar after his Friday night opening gig and Saturday night gig.

When asked Giovanni Malacrino, who has operated restaurants in Mill Lane for 25 years this year said:

"Sir Tom is a great friend to us.  As a venue we have been through very tough economic times recently and transforming the nightclub into a live music and restaurant venue has been a gamble. But our dream is to bring back mature nights out to Cardiff where people over 30 can enjoy sophisticated live music in comfort.

Hosting Sir Tom and in the same week as Michael Ball and Sir Cliff Richard has given us a great boost and a great launch for our new venue."

"I told Sir Tom that we brought this refurbishment forward to coincide with the shows coming to Cardiff and worked around the clock to get it done. My wish was for Sir Tom to come and enjoy the piano wine bar at gios.

Over the years I have looked after hundreds of a class celebrities as well as our wonderful customers including Luciano Pavarotti, Enrique Iglesias and Jose Careras but nobody can beat Sir Tom...he's like one of the boys with style."

Guests at the venue included Ed Brown of Cardiff who said: "I couldn't believe it..it was great to be in Cardiff and see a Welsh icon sitting near us. Sir Tom was very open and happy to meet fans and have his picture taken."
